Drivers Education School
Sunday, June 8 through Friday, June 20, 2008
In partnership with Advantage Drivers Training in Columbus, deaf and hard of hearing students 15 ½ years or older will have an opportunity to participate in this two week Drivers Education School. Students will learn the rules of the road and driving laws of the state, participate in the 24 hours of “in class” instruction on defensive driving, and take the learners permit test. Students who already have a permit license or who pass the test early in the second week will also be able to complete the 8 hours of behind-the-wheel driving requirement. (Those who don't earn a permit license early enough will need to schedule driving hours at a later time in Columbus.) Tutors will work with students as well as the instructors from the Advantage Drivers Training, using interpreter support when necessary.
By June 8, students must have either a Temporary Permit License or a parent-signed application packet for a Temporary Permit License (available from your local BMV) to participate in this school. There will be recreational activities scheduled for evenings and the weekend of June 14-15.
Limit: 15 students so apply early. A waiting list of students will be maintained in case early registering students have to drop out of the class.
Camp Accommodations: Students will stay in fan-cooled dormitories and eat in the cafeteria. Dormitories are supervised by experienced youth leaders following established expectations for student care. Students will have access to TTY and video-phone service and captioned television. Students should be prepared to cooperate with others, take care of their own things, and use safety and appropriate decision making. Students either need two weeks worth of clothes or be prepared to use OSD's laundry facilities on the weekend.
Registration: The registration fee and deposits need to accompany the student's application form. (Registration fees may be waived for families who can document living within the poverty range guidelines, though NOT the fees to Advantage Driver Training, which is a licensed, private business.)

Registration fee payable to OSD: $25.00
