CENTER for OUTREACH SERVICES
Student Assessment Services

The Center for Outreach Services provides free multidisciplinary educational assessments for deaf and hard-of-hearing students attending any school in Ohio.

Benefits
  • Our team of specialists, all knowledgeable about deafness and skilled in sign language, assess deaf and hard-of-hearing students using their primary mode of communication - spoken English, sign language, gestures, etc.
  • Assessment information can assist the local school district in writing the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and determining the most appropriate educational placement.

Services
  • Multifactored, multidisciplinary assessment for deaf and hard-of-hearing children by a team of specialists which includes the following components:
    • educational assessments
    • psychological assessments
    • audiological assessments
    • communication assessments (including speech and sign language use)
    • other special areas of investigation as needed
  • Assessment instruments are administered by the specialists using the student’s primary mode of communication (spoken English, sign language, gesture, etc.), unless it is clearly not possible to do so.
  • Tests are validated for the specific purpose intended and evaluators follow procedures in accordance with test instructions. In instances when it is not feasible to follow procedures with a student, the evaluator will use their professional judgement to modify the assessment to yield the best estimate of the child’s ability and document the modifications.
  • During a meeting with the family and school personnel in attendanceevaluation results and recommendations are shared and there is an opportunity to ask questions.
  • A Multifactored Evaluation (MFE) report is completed providing written test information, assessment results and recommendations using the State of Ohio Multifactored Evaluation forms. The report is sent to the Superintendent of the student’s local school district and the parents.
  • Testing is generally completed at the Center for Outreach Services at the Ohio School for the Deaf in Columbus. Individual team members can also go to the student's school program to observe and/or test the student.

Process
  • School districts or parents can contact the Center for Outreach Services to request an assessment.
  • The Center for Outreach Services will send a referral packet to gather information from the school district and family.
  • Upon completion and return of the referral packet, an appointment date is set and shared with both the school district and parents.
  • Specialists use the information gathered in the referral packet to determine which assessments to prepare.
  • Guest rooms are available at no cost for families who choose to come to campus the night before testing.
