CENTER for OUTREACH SERVICES
Deafness Collection at the State Library of Ohio

Books on shelves

The Center for Outreach Services and the State Library of Ohio are collaborating to bring a collection of Deafness and interpreting-related materials to all Ohioans. The Center for Outreach Services provides resources of interest to K-12 deaf educators, interpreters and parents in a variety of formats (books, DVDs, CD-Roms, VHS tapes). The State Library of Ohio catalogues and maintains circulation of these items for use by individuals across the state. The Deafness collection currently contains over 400 items.

Receive a State Library Card through the Center for Outreach Services

Any Ohio resident can request a card to borrow items from the State Library of Ohio or borrow items housed at the State Library through interlibrary loan at their local library. Individuals on the mailing list for the Center for Outreach Services, however, are eligible for a State Library card with the special privilege of having items mailed to them at no cost (individuals are responsible for the return shipping on the item).

If you would like to be added to our mailing list and receive a State Library card with the additional privileges, complete our mailing list survey.

Sports Signs VideosSearch the Collection

Items in the collection can be searched online through the State Library of Ohio’s web site at http://slonet.state.oh.us. By modifying the “location” searched to specify “Deaf – ISLR Collection,” you can search only items from the Deafness collection.

You can also browse a list of items in the collection (Adobe Reader required to view this document).

The items are housed as a separate collection at the State Library of Ohio in downtown Columbus where they can be browsed by State Library patrons.

Request Materials

You can request materials multiple ways:

  • Visit the State Library of Ohio in downtown Columbus and borrow items
  • Search and request items online through the State Library’s web site. Materials will automatically be mailed to individuals with a State Library of Ohio card through the Center for Outreach Services. You will be responsible for return shipping.
  • Request items through OhioLINK, a consortium of 85 libraries across Ohio that includes the State Library, and pick them up and return them to a participating library. You can search for the item through the State Library’s website at http://slonet.state.oh.us and then click on the OhioLINK Central button above the record for that item to see and request that item in the OhioLINK catalog.
  • Request items from your local or school library through interlibrary loan (following the policies of your local library)

Expanding the Collection

Over time, the Center for Outreach Services plans to expand the collection and add new titles. If you have suggestions for titles to add, contact the Center for Outreach Services with your recommendations.
